THE DURATION

Tone 2 is the second-longest of the five tones. The rise needs room to build. Master doesn’t hurry. Neither does your voice.

THE TRAP

Tone 2 and Tone 3 both rise. That’s the trap. The difference is where: Tone 2 starts in the middle and climbs immediately. Tone 3 sinks low first, then rises late. One rises from standing. The other from kneeling. Then there’s the English problem — rising pitch means you’re asking a question. Tone 2 isn’t asking. It rises with the certainty of someone who already knows. Stop asking. Start ascending. And when other tones need to move forward, they become Tone 2. Everyone comes to the omniscient one eventually.
